Caracas, Venezuela. Agosto, 2021.- Hombres, mujeres, niños y adultos mayores están expuestos a diversas patologías que pueden afectar el cerebro y su funcionamiento; algunas pueden tratarse con métodos farmacológicos, otras en cambio llevan obligatoriamente al quirófano.
A propósito del día Mundial del Cerebro que se celebra el 22 de julio, el doctor Radovan Sancevic, neurólogo del Grupo Médico Santa Paula (GMSP), con una amplia trayectoria en el cuidado de este órgano, compartió el listado de las patologías más recurrentes que pueden afectar al cerebro, durante el desarrollo de una persona.
Siendo el cerebro el encargado de integrar toda la información recibida por los órganos sensoriales y organizar una respuesta, además de ser el responsable de controlar las funciones motoras, emocionales y cognitivas como son el razonamiento, la expresión emocional y la memoria, es importante conocer qué hacer cuando algo falla.
Niños: Hidrocefalia y craneosinostosis
El doctor Sancevic explica que la patología más recurrente en los niños recién nacidos es la hidrocefalia, la cual se caracteriza por la acumulación de líquido encefaloraquídeo a nivel de las cavidades del cerebro.
“Se produce cuando hay alguna alteración y comienza a crecer la cabeza de los niños. El tratamiento de la hidrocefalia es con válvulas, que funcionan con unos catéteres colocados dentro de esas cavidades, y que permiten drenar el líquido hacia el abdomen. Es una patología reversible”.
Otra causa frecuente en los niños es la craneosinostosis. “Es un defecto de nacimiento, en el cual los huesos del cráneo del bebé se cierran prematuramente, haciendo que el crecimiento de su cabeza no sea regular; es decir, en todas las direcciones, y por el contrario puede crecer más la frente o la parte de atrás. Eso es lo que llaman niños cabeza de mango, o las plagiocefalia. Hay diferentes tipos de craneosinostosis y se resuelven con intervenciones quirúrgicas en las que se eliminan las uniones anormales de los huesos, y se realizan reconstrucciones casi completas de la bóveda craneal.”
Adolescentes: Migrañas por chocolates y refrescos oscuros
Entre los adolescentes, la patología más frecuente es la migraña. “Es un dolor de cabeza, o las famosas jaquecas que puede comenzar en edades de 10 a 15 años. Frecuentemente se registra más en mujeres, y es un dolor de cabeza que va a estar contigo toda tu vida, con períodos mejores y otros menos. Para estos casos, hay tratamientos preventivos, y tratamientos medicamentosos para las crisis severas,” según explica el doctor.
Al detallar las causas de la migraña en adolescentes, el doctor Sancevic explica que “está asociada normalmente a un tipo de comidas como los chocolates, refrescos oscuros y jugos; por ello deben evitar este tipo de productos.”
Otra patología recurrente en los adolescentes y que afecta directamente al cerebro es la epilepsia, que se caracteriza por convulsiones.
Adultos: Tumores cerebrales
En los casos de adultos, las patologías más frecuentes, según el experto del GMSP, son los tumores cerebrales. “Hay tumores malignos y benignos, hay cáncer de cerebro”.
En el caso de los pacientes mayores de 70 años, la patología muy frecuente que se observa es la hidrocefalia normotensiva del adulto, “que es una acumulación de líquido anormal que produce la enfermedad de Hacking, que produce un trastorno de la marcha, urinarios y cognitivos. Es importante conocerla porque, es la única demencia en el adulto mayor que es reversible. Si se le coloca una válvula en el cerebro el paciente mejora; de allí la importancia del diagnóstico.
Cómo cuidar nuestro cerebro
Son múltiples los estudios que señalan que cuidar la tensión, controlar el azúcar y evitar fumar son acciones de protección al cerebro. En tal sentido el doctor Sancevic destaca además que es importante también hacer ejercicio.
Las personas que hacen ejercicio tienen mejor memoria y una mayor actividad cognitiva con el paso de los años. Hacer ejercicios anaeróbicos permite una mejor oxigenación del cerebro. También una buena dieta, baja en colesterol, en triglicéridos y en carbohidratos.
“Y finalmente una cosa que poco le paran, hay que descansar. Hay que dormir las horas necesarias, entre 5 y 8 horas. Es el tiempo que el cerebro necesita pues las neuronas se nutren mejor cuando duermes”.
Diagnósticos y tratamientos
En la actualidad el GMSP cuenta con una Unidad de Imagenología que trabaja los 365 días del año, las 24 horas del día, lo que permite atender los requerimientos de los especialistas en cuanto a resonancias magnéticas, tomografías, arteriografía, entre otros estudios, que permitirán un oportuno diagnóstico y tratamiento.
Disponer del personal especializado para neurocirugías infantiles y de adultos además de quirófanos bien equipados, permiten proyectar el éxito de cada una de las intervenciones que se realizan en este centro de salud que marca pauta en la vanguardia tecnológica en el país.-.
