Anuncia PepsiCo “Agricultura Positiva” con metas globales para 2030 que ampliará prácticas agrícolas regenerativas

Abril del 2021.- PepsiCo anunció el programa “Agricultura Positiva” a partir del cual se ha fijado tres nuevas metas para 2030:

· Primero, ampliar la adopción de prácticas agrícolas regenerativas a 7 millones de acres (equivalentes a 2.8 millones de hectáreas y a casi el 100% de la tierra que utilizan los agricultores para cultivar y proveer insumos para PepsiCo a nivel mundial). Estas prácticas contribuirán a la recuperación y conservación del suelo mediante el uso de materia orgánica y cultivos de cobertura que permiten mejorar la fertilidad del suelo, controlar la aparición de plagas e incrementar la biodiversidad.

Para finales de esta década, la compañía podrá reducir, al menos, 3 millones de toneladas de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero gracias a estos esfuerzos a partir del uso de tecnología inteligente que permite, entre otras cosas, un uso eficiente de agroquímicos (fertilizantes y pesticidas); estrategias de digitalización y ahorro de agua. En conjunto, estas medidas permitirán a la empresa generar una menor huella de carbono en los cultivos.

Tras casi una década de progreso con su Programa de Agricultura Sostenible (SFP, por sus siglas en inglés), PepsiCo seguirá colaborando con agricultores en 60 países para adoptar prácticas que les permitan ser más resilientes, y mejorar y restaurar los ecosistemas. PepsiCo también seguirá extendiendo su red mundial de granjas de demostración, la cual aumentó, en 2020, a más de 350. De éstas, más del 85%, ha puesto en marcha prácticas de agricultura regenerativa.

En Latinoamérica, en 2020, se implementaron 7 nuevas granjas de demostración en Argentina (Otamendi), Brasil (Paraná y Sao Paulo) y México (Los Mochis, Ciudad Obregón y Aramberri Nuevo León), con importantes resultados:

o En México (Guasave Sinaloa y Ciudad Obregón), se registró una reducción del 28% en cuanto al uso del agua en comparación con los sistemas de agua tradicionales y una reducción del 36% en la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero.

Las granjas de demostración en Los Mochis, Sinaloa y en Ciudad Obregón Sonora, tienen como objetivo dar a conocer el potencial que tiene tanto la digitalización como las tecnologías de agua en la zona más importante de producción de papa en México; acelerar la adopción de prácticas y tecnologías de “Agricultura Positiva” y mejorar el desempeño comercial de los productores.

Por su parte, en la granja de Aramberri, Nuevo León, se cultivarán papas utilizando sistemas de riego eficientes con tecnologías de gestión inteligente de agua.

o En Brasil (Paraná), el rendimiento aumentó 8% al usar sistemas de riego por goteo. A partir del uso de nuevas tecnologías, también se registró una reducción en los costos (de entre el 2 y el 25%) teniendo en cuenta el aumento del rendimiento y el costo por tonelada de producción.

Como parte de esta nueva estrategia, PepsiCo, la Fundación PepsiCo Global y la Fundación PepsiCo México anuncian una inversión de un millón de dólares en un programa de agricultura sustentable y desarrollo socioeconómico en México para apoyar a más de 900 productores agrícolas de plátano, cacao y palma en los estados de Tabasco y Chiapas. En alianza con Proforest, PepsiCo México busca mejorar las fuentes de ingreso y la resiliencia de las comunidades locales brindándoles acceso al mercado, aumentando la tasa de adopción de prácticas agrícolas regenerativas y mejorando la productividad a través de la diversificación de cultivos.

Con una duración de tres años, el programa contempla también un componente para favorecer el acceso al agua y contribuir a la seguridad alimentaria de las comunidades. Aproximadamente 37,600 personas serán beneficiadas (50% de ellas mujeres; en línea con el compromiso global de PepsiCo de que, al menos, la mitad de los beneficiarios de sus programas de impacto social sean mujeres).

Daniel Arancibia, Director de Proforest para América Latina, dijo que “PepsiCo está mostrando un compromiso audaz para apoyar medios de vida sostenibles (…) en México. Proforest está encantada de formar parte de esta iniciativa y de ampliar prácticas agrícolas regenerativas con las comunidades locales del sur de México, uniendo esfuerzos con PepsiCo como catalizador del cambio en todo el sistema alimentario. Este programa muestra el liderazgo de PepsiCo al trabajar más allá de su cadena de valor para contribuir también a generar resultados positivos para las personas y los paisajes en México”.

· Segundo, mejorar el sustento de más de 250,000 personas en su cadena de valor agrícola y en las comunidades en las que opera, incluyendo el empoderamiento económico de las mujeres. PepsiCo centrará su trabajo en las comunidades agrícolas más vulnerables. La empresa seguirá avanzando en este objetivo mediante alianzas con socios estratégicos que, en Latinoamérica, nos permiten implementar programas e iniciativas como:

o Asociación Asplabel (2009), en Colombia, creada para atender la demanda local y ayudar a mujeres (víctimas del conflicto armado) facilitando su trabajo en el pelado de plátano y apoyando también a sus hijos y familias en la comunidad de Belén de Umbría.

o “Mujeres, agua y reconciliación” (2016), en Colombia, el cual apoya a asociaciones de agricultores dirigidas por mujeres, para que cultiven y vendan papas. 40 familias encabezadas por mujeres son parte del programa, gracias al cual el rendimiento de la producción por hectárea aumentó de 20 a 45 toneladas en 2019.

o “Amaranto para el bienestar comunitario” (2018-2021), en México, mediante el cual PepsiCo apoya la seguridad alimentaria, la nutrición y el sustento de más de 40 comunidades mediante el cultivo sostenible de amaranto para su autoconsumo y comercialización. El programa beneficia a más de 31,000 personas (más de 16,000 son mujeres) entre las 200 familias cultivan el amaranto y las 31 cooperativas lo comercializan.

o “Ella Alimenta al Mundo” (2019), en Perú, el cual beneficia a más de 400,000 agricultoras y a sus familias para que puedan aumentar su producción, tener acceso a financiamiento e insumos agrícolas.

o Fondo para la Agricultura de Próxima Generación (anunciado en enero de 2021), en Ecuador, Guatemala y República Dominicana con el objetivo de identificar desafíos relacionados con temas de género en las cadenas de suministro de papa de PepsiCo para mejorar la resiliencia y la sostenibilidad de la cadena de valor en esos países.

“En países en desarrollo, las mujeres representan casi la mitad de la mano de obra agrícola y trabajan a menudo sin formación, herramientas adecuadas y derechos sobre sus tierras. De acuerdo con la FAO, si tuvieran el mismo acceso a los recursos que los hombres, podrían aumentar el rendimiento de sus cultivos entre un 20 y un 30%, reduciendo el número de personas con hambre en el mundo en hasta 150 millones. La inserción de la mujer en el agro es indispensable, no solo otorga una ventaja comercial competitiva en términos de crecimiento y prosperidad, sino que genera también una importante derrama económica y social. En PepsiCo, reconocemos su valor, su determinación y su talento”, señaló Paula Santilli, CEO de PepsiCo Latinoamérica.

· Tercero, producir de forma sostenible el 100% de sus ingredientes clave, incluyendo no sólo cultivos de origen directo (papas, maíz, avena y naranjas), sino también los cultivos de terceros, como aceites vegetales y cereales. Desde 2020, los cultivos de origen directo de PepsiCo son producidos 100% de forma sostenible en 28 países. A nivel mundial, casi el 87% de éstos se obtienen de forma sostenible a través del programa SFP.

o En Latinoamérica, 98% de los suministros de papa están certificados por este programa, el cual refleja las mejores prácticas sociales, medioambientales y económicas.

o En Brasil, el 100% de las papas son producidas de forma sostenible desde 2019. El proceso está certificado también por el SFP.

o En México, la empresa estableció 9 granjas de demostración, específicamente de aceite de palma, entre 2019 y 2020; país en donde hay cerca de 7,000 productores de aceite de palma.

“Cualquier plan para hacer frente a los desafíos urgentes que enfrenta el sistema alimentario mundial debe contemplar la agricultura, fuente de alimentación para miles de millones de personas y una herramienta clave para lidiar con el cambio climático y la desigualdad”, dijo el CEO y presidente del Consejo de Administración de PepsiCo, Ramón Laguarta. “La agenda de Agricultura Positiva de PepsiCo prioriza la inversión, la innovación y una sólida colaboración con nuestros socios agrícolas para generar un impacto en todo el mundo.”

Parte importante de “Agricultura Positiva” es contribuir a transformar y mejorar la forma en que los alimentos son producidos y consumidos. Junto con el Foro Económico Mundial y varios aliados del sector público y privado – PepsiCo lanzó en enero de este año el concepto de “centros de innovación alimentaria” como el que será puesto en marcha en Colombia a finales del 2021. Dichos centros se utilizarán para identificar los cuellos de botella de la cadena de valor, permitir el intercambio de información y ofrecer soluciones a escala para beneficiar a los sistemas alimentarios locales usando tecnologías e innovaciones agronómicas. Los temas clave para PepsiCo son: optimización de los alimentos para un consumo saludable y sostenible; innovaciones en infraestructura para conectar la producción local, los mercados y el consumo; y mejorar el acceso de los agricultores a las herramientas digitales para mejorar el rendimiento.

“Agricultura Positiva” es un paso más en el camino de PepsiCo Positive que se ha trazado la empresa y se suma al reciente anuncio de PepsiCo de duplicar su meta de cambio climático comprometiéndose a tener emisiones netas cero para 2040 y a reducir sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) en más del 40% para 2030 en toda su cadena de valor.
