Con inversión más US$30 millones PepsiCo apuesta por R. D. al expandir Planta Caribe y nueva línea Lay’s

República Dominicana, junio 30, 2021.- PepsiCo, líder mundial de alimentos y bebidas, afianza su presencia en República Dominicana con una reciente inversión de más de US $30 millones de dólares para la expansión de la Planta Caribe.

La ampliación incluye la instalación de una nueva línea de papa capaz de producir 10.9 millones de unidades de Lay’s al mes; la habilitación de una línea exclusiva de plátano y una nueva bodega de materia prima que duplica el espacio de almacenaje y permite con esto incrementar el volumen de compra a productores agrícolas locales. A través de esta inversión la compañía refuerza su alianza y compromiso con el desarrollo del país y la recuperación económica de la región.

Gerardo Díaz de León, presidente de PepsiCo Alimentos en Centroamérica, Caribe y Cono Sur, dijo “creemos en República Dominicana y vamos por más, juntos”; y añadió “los dominicanos han mostrado la preferencia por nuestros productos y esto se retribuye naturalmente con el compromiso de PepsiCo por invertir más en el país. La expansión de la planta Caribe, que produce snacks del portafolio de Frito Lay, implicó el desarrollo de una obra civil importante y la instalación de nuevas tecnologías, que incrementan la capacidad de producción de nuestra amada marca Lay’s. Esto nos permite generar más empleos en el campo y comprar más papa local a los productores dominicanos, así como acercarnos más a nuestros consumidores a través de los colmados”.

Actualmente PepsiCo mantiene contratos vigentes con comunidades de agricultores de las zonas de Constanza, Moca, La Vega y La Canela, que en promedio anual producen más de 9,000 toneladas de papa, plátano y yuca; cubriendo más de 450 hectáreas de cultivo, y apoyando cientos de empleos. Cabe resaltar que, para papa, la producción se eleva a 7,000 toneladas que representan el 8% de la producción total nacional del tubérculo. Los contratos agrícolas de PepsiCo incluyen capacitación y certificación de los socios agricultores a través del Programa de Agricultura Sostenible (Sustainable Farming Program) de la empresa, cuyo objetivo es asegurar prácticas sustentables estandarizadas, en todas sus operaciones.

Para PepsiCo, la agenda de sustentabilidad y el fortalecimiento de las comunidades donde opera es parte esencial de su visión de Ganar con Propósito, que busca integrar al corazón de la estrategia de negocio metas ambientales y de impacto social, que contribuyan al objetivo de construir un sistema alimentario sostenible.

En República Dominicana, este 2021 estamos invirtiendo más de US$230,000 dólares en programas cruciales para el desarrollo de nuestro negocio y comunidades: agua, empoderamiento de la mujer y agricultura sostenible. Los programas incluyen Agua para el Planeta, en alianza con The Nature Conservancy (desde 2018) para la restauración del Fondo de Agua de Santo Domingo -en la cuenca del río Isabela-, así como la iniciativa regional “Mujeres con Propósito” (en colaboración con FUNDES, que opera en el país desde 2017) y ha brindado, a la fecha, capacitación y oportunidades de crecimiento económico a cerca de 1,000 mujeres dominicanas. Finalmente, el Fondo de Agricultura de Nueva Generación que inició este año en alianza con el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo busca promover la inclusión de género en la cadena de valor de papa de PepsiCo (2021-2023), con foco en la zona del valle de Constanza.

Este tipo de inversiones locales permiten que avancemos como compañía al mismo tiempo que impulsamos la recuperación económica que República Dominicana necesita en estos momentos y cumplimos con nuestra misión de crear sonrisas en cada sorbo y cada bocado”.
