Destacan 98% casos cáncer mama pueden vencerse con diagnóstico temprano

Caracas, Venezuela, Febrero 3, 2021.- En lo que respecta a la medicina oncológica, existen diferentes variables  que condicionan la evolución de la enfermedad y el tratamiento del cáncer; pero lo que sí han determinado los estudios científicos como una conclusión definitiva, es que la posibilidad de supervivencia aumenta cuando el diagnóstico se hace más tempranamente.

Según el cirujano oncólogo y mastólogo Javier Soteldo, del Grupo Médico Santa Paula (GMSP), existe hasta un 98% de posibilidad de que, una paciente con cáncer de mama se cure totalmente si se detectan las lesiones cancerígenas cuando aún son “muy pequeñas”.

El autoexamen mamario ya no es suficiente

Soteldo, quien también es vicepresidente de la Sociedad Anticancerosa de Venezuela  (SAV), indicó que hace 2 o 3 décadas, era importante la campaña de tocarse y examinarse las mamas para prevenir este tipo de cáncer; pero en la actualidad, se cuenta con equipos más avanzados y mejor conocimiento médico para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la enfermedad, más allá del autoexamen.

En este sentido,  el GMPS se realizan procedimientos de avanzada tecnología como, por ejemplo, la aplicación de radioterapia intraoperatoria, además de cirugía oncológica; el diagnóstico por imagenología  y otros servicios médicos, para la atención de las personas con cáncer.  

La institución también cuenta con un equipo multidisciplinario para tratar  a cada paciente, como enfatizó el médico oncólogo e internista Juan Celis: “A diferencia de lo que sucedía años atrás, en la actualidad, el tratamiento de cada persona se discute entre un grupo de especialistas de varias áreas. Como médico oncólogo ciertamente decido gran parte de él, pero estamos en conjunto en la toma de decisiones entre el cirujano oncólogo, la imagenóloga y los de radiodiagnóstico. Contamos también con psicólogos,  nutricionistas, especialistas de cuidados paliativos, odontólogos y cardiólogos, para garantizar que todo el proceso de quimioterapia se lleve a cabo sin complicaciones”, señaló Celis.

Mitos sobre el cáncer de mama

Sobre el diagnóstico, tratamiento y manejo de la enfermedad, Soteldo aseguró que también existen algunos mitos que deben ser superados y aclarados, para beneficio de pacientes en su recuperación. Enfatizó que las biopsias, por ejemplo, son totalmente seguras y no “riegan” el cáncer en el cuerpo, como piensan algunas personas.

“No hay nada más peligroso que ya tener esas lesiones cancerígenas en la mama, porque ya esa lesión está mandando células malignas a todas partes. Entonces, hacerse este procedimiento con una persona adecuada, es decir, con un mastólogo, no acarrea ningún riesgo. El peligro que pueden tener los pacientes de no hacerlo es 1000 veces mayor que al realizarlo”, afirmó Soteldo.

Otro mito extendido según el cirujano oncólogo es que el cáncer de mama duele. Aclara que la persona no siente dolor hasta que el mal está en estadios muy avanzados, cuando ya hay un bulto en el seno o en la axila,  y esto es lo que hace a los pacientes acudir muy tarde al especialista.

En cuanto a las diversas opciones de tratamiento, Celis señaló que la quimioterapia y la radioterapia tienen una  “mala fama”, que ya no se corresponde con la realidad. “Desde hace al menos 10 años para acá se ha logrado que los efectos tóxicos de ambos sean mínimos y  las reacciones adversas sean controlables y predecibles”, indicó el especialista.

Por su parte, la médico radiólogo Isabel Muñoz aseguró que también hay mitos sobre la mamografía. Explicó que este tipo de examen diagnóstico es 100% seguro y no tiene radiaciones suficientes para causar cáncer. La radiación que emite el mamógrafo es considerablemente menor comparado con algo tan común como montarse en un avión, en un viaje de 7 horas.

GMSP: apoyando la prevención y el control a tiempo

Fortalecer el concepto de cultura saludable y, sobre todo, conciencia en cuanto a la prevención, es uno de los objetivos que persigue el GMSP, en beneficio de la colectividad.
