El oftalmólogo Martín Serrano, del Grupo Médico Santa Paula (GMSP), especialista en cirugía de retina y vítreo, indica que “la luz azul de los aparatos electrónicos disminuye el número de parpadeos y puede ocasionar resequedad en los ojos, o lo que también se conoce como el síndrome del ojo seco”, situación que debe atenderse a tiempo, para evitar consecuencias posteriores.
Aclara el especialista que hay que estar muy atentos con el uso de esta herramienta tecnológica, “en niños con estrabismo, por ejemplo, por tener un ojo dominante o con ambliopía, se utilizan videojuegos de modo terapéutico para obligar a estos pacientes en edad pediátrica a usar el ojo con el que ve menos”.
Así mismo, refiere que el sedentarismo generado por la pandemia, puede incidir en el desarrollo psicomotor del niño, por el uso indiscriminado de las tabletas, impactando en la salud de los ojos “Estamos observando niños con enfermedades de adultos por ser sedentarios. Nos encontramos con infantes con síntomas de ojos secos, de conjuntivitis capilar o de enfermedades típicas de personas que laboran en oficinas. Aparte del cansancio ocular”.
El uso prolongado de estos aparatos también causaría dolores articulares (sobre todo en el cuello) por mantener posturas inadecuadas, dificultades para descansar o conciliar el sueño, así como incremento de cefaleas y migrañas”.
El papel de los padres
Los padres de niños y adolescentes deben tomar previsiones para evitar consecuencias negativas por el uso y abuso de pantallas de celulares, tabletas, computadoras y otros dispositivos, más hoy que debido a la pandemia de Covid-19, están recibiendo clases en línea, lo que ha multiplicado los tiempos de permanencia frente a estos aparatos.
“Esto se ha observado durante la pandemia. Por el confinamiento obligado, muchas personas, sobre todo jóvenes, se volcaron por completo al mundo digital”, acota.
Serrano recomienda que los niños y jóvenes se despeguen de las pantallas cada media hora, por espacio de un minuto aproximadamente: “estas pausas sirven para parpadear, estirarse y levantarse”. De igual manera, agregó que las pantallas deben ubicarse por debajo del nivel de la cabeza “para evitar la fatiga visual”.
Desconectarse antes de dormir
La sugerencia del especialista va dirigida a dejar de usar estos dispositivos después de las 8 de la noche. “Lo ideal es detener su uso al menos dos horas antes de dormir, para que el cerebro entienda que es momento de descansar, indicación que funciona para niños y adultos”, manifiesta.
Finalmente recomienda acudir a consulta anual y convertir este encuentro con el oftalmólogo en un patrón a seguir como cultura saludable.
El especialista Serrano, quien trabaja en el GMSP desde 2018, indicó que labora junto a otros 8 especialistas en la Unidad de Regeneración Visual. “Los casos más frecuentes que atendemos son problemas de refracción o debidos a la diabetes así como patologías propias de la degeneración por la edad de los pacientes. El rango de edad es muy amplio pero buena parte de ellos son personas de la tercera edad”.
