En una conferencia de prensa ofrecida en Barbados y transmitida por internet, Cheasty explicó hoy el impacto que tendrá la caída de los precios de petróleo entre los distintos países que tienen vínculos con Petrocaribe.
Así, Guyana, República Dominicana y Jamaica serán los menos afectados porque sus Gobiernos se han preparado económicamente para responder adecuadamente al cambio. Al contrario, Nicaragua y Haití serán los más afectados porque no cuentan con reservas amplias o un robusto mercado financiero interno. Algo parecido ocurrirá con Belice.
“La caída en los precios de petróleo es más compleja para los miembros de Petrocaribe que para otros importadores de crudo”, expresó Cheasty, quien recordó que incluso hay expertos que han cuestionado si el apoyo regional a Petrocaribe debe continuar.
El barril de petróleo ronda estos días los 50 dólares, la mitad de lo que costaba en junio pasado.
Petrocaribe fue creado en 2005 por iniciativa de Venezuela con el objetivo de suministrar combustibles a los países miembros en condiciones ventajosas de pago, como créditos blandos y bajas tasas de interés.
Esta integrado por 18 países, incluidos Honduras, Guatemala, Cuba, Nicaragua, República Dominicana, Haití, Belice y una decena de islas del Caribe.
