La producción sostenible de aceite de palma es una de las principales apuestas de Colombia, que está cerca de lograr el objetivo «de llegar a cero deforestación y ser un líder mundial en las mejores prácticas de producción» en este sector, informaron este domingo fuentes oficiales y del sector.
La idea, detalló la agencia estatal ProColombia en un comunicado, es aprovechar las más de 5,2 millones de hectáreas que tiene el país con alto potencial para la siembra y la exportación de aceite de palma.“El aceite de palma ha sido un gran jalonador de la canasta agroexportadora del país históricamente y también lo ha sido durante los últimos meses», dijo la presidenta de ProColombia, Flavia Santoro, citada en la información.
La funcionaria agregó que los «atributos de sostenibilidad» de este producto «son, sin lugar a duda, unos elementos atractivos y de gran interés por parte de los compradores internacionales».
«Por lo cual desde ProColombia seguiremos apoyando e incentivando para que cada vez más empresas se comprometan a preservar el medioambiente y a ayudar al desarrollo de las comunidades”, agregó.
UNO DE LOS PRINCIPALES PROVEEDORES DE AMÉRICA
Colombia, que es uno de los principales proveedores de aceite de palma en América y el cuarto productor mundial, ha reducido la deforestación ligada a la palmicultura al 0.4 %, según el Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (Ideam).
Igualmente está vigente el «Acuerdo por la Cero Deforestación en la Cadena del Aceite de Palma», que fue firmado por 20 compañías del sector, representantes del Gobierno y organizaciones sociales y auspiciado por otros gobiernos como los de Reino Unido, Países Bajos y Noruega.
