Marzo 2021. El gobierno de Uruguay excluyó de la prohibición que existe desde el 2017, para la comercialización de los dispositivos electrónicos que calientan el tabaco. Por medio de un Decreto promulgado el 23 marzo, el Poder Ejecutivo consideró el avance tecnológico y la evidencia científica de estas alternativas, como claves para tomar la decisión.
“Existen dispositivos electrónicos para la administración de nicotina que emplean una tecnología mediante la cual se calienta tabaco seco, respecto de los que existen datos científicos que indican que los mismos resultan en una menor exposición de los usuarios a las sustancias tóxicas asociadas al consumo tradicional de tabaco”, se explica en el Decreto.
Uruguay se suma a países como el Reino Unido, Japón o Estados Unidos donde los productos libres de humo, como los cigarrillos electrónicos o los dispositivos que calientan tabaco, en lugar de quemarlo como IQOS, están siendo considerados una parte de la gestión de políticas públicas en salud, por ser una alternativa de menor riesgo que continuar fumando cigarrillos tradicionales.
“Constantes avances tecnológicos y la creciente diversidad y disponibilidad de nuevos productos hacen necesaria una mayor precisión respecto del alcance de la prohibición…” es necesario considerar “que los dispositivos electrónicos que emplean una tecnología mediante la cual se calienta el tabaco seco cuentan con una validación científica suficiente para justificar su exclusión de la prohibición…”, afirma el Poder Ejecutivo del país suramericano.
