Las remesas que envían los migrantes latinoamericanos hacia sus países de origen crecieron 6,5% en 2020 sobre el año anterior a 103.000 millones de dólares pese a la pandemia, según un informe publicado este miércoles por el Banco Mundial.
«Parece como que no hubiera habido crisis», dijo a la AFP Dilip Ratha, el principal economista del Banco Mundial experto en Migración y Remesas, quien señaló que el monto de remesas hacia América Latina fue una «sorpresa».
Ratha señaló que sin estas ayudas los niveles de pobreza habrían sido aún peores, al igual que la inseguridad alimentaria en países como Honduras o Nicaragua.
El economista destacó que esta fortaleza también permitió financiar gasto en salud de las familias, algo fundamental en medio de una crisis como la pandemia.
Según el informe del BM «los flujos de remesas han mantenido más resiliencia en Latinoamérica en comparación a otras regiones del mundo y en relación a muchos otros tipos de flujos de recursos como la inversión extranjera directa».
«En tiempos de crisis económica y desastres (naturales), los trabajadores migrantes ahorran y envían una mayor porción de sus ingresos que en tiempos normales», constató el Banco.
En el mundo en tanto, los flujos de remesas cayeron 1,6%, una cifra que es, sin embargo, inferior «a lo proyectado inicialmente».
«Las remesas registradas oficialmente hacia los países de ingresos bajos y medios sumaron 540.000 millones en 2020, sólo un 1,6% por debajo del total de 548.000 millones de 2019», indicó el Banco.
