SANTO DOMINGO.- Las perspectivas de la geopolítica de los Estados Unidos en la región del Caribe y su potencial impacto en la economía y el comercio dominicano fueron parte de los temas que abordó el general retirado estadounidense Wesley Clark con miembros del Consejo de Directores de la Cámara Americana de Comercio de la República Dominicana (AMCHAMDR).
Durante la visita oficial a la sede de AMCHAMDR, Clark conversó sobre las expectativas de la política exterior del gobierno estadounidense en Latinomérica, con especial interés en República Dominicana, el combate al comercio ilícito y el perjuicio fiscal que este provoca, así como también la geopolítica en las relaciones entre China y los Estados Unidos.
Mientras que los miembros del Consejo de Directores de AMCHAMDR destacaron su interés para que la República Dominicana se proyecte como un destino confiable para invertir y hacer negocios, además de que aproveche su posición geográfica para posicionarse como Hub Logístico Regional y plataforma de producción integrada a la cadena de suministros norteamericana.
En ese sentido, el General Clark y el Consejo de Directores de la Cámara Americana de Comercio abogaron para que se dispongan y ejecuten políticas públicas que permitan minimizar y sancionar el contrabando y el comercio ilícito.
La comisión de AMCHAMDR que recibió al General Clark la integraron Roberto Herrera, presidente; William Malamud, vicepresidente ejecutivo; Ramón Ortega, pasado presidente inmediato; y los directores: Lucile Houellemont y Fernando Villanueva.
En modalidad virtual participaron: Edwin De los Santos, vicepresidente; Francesca Rainieri, Tesorera; María Waleska Álvarez, Secretaria; y los directores: Ana Figueiredo, Juan Roberto Amell, Eduardo Cruz, Juan Velázquez, Ligia Bonetti, Marco Cabral y Carlos José Martí; así como también los pasados presidentes de AMCHAMDR, Gustavo Tavares, Máximo Vidal, Julio Virgilio Brache y Marcelino San Miguel II.
Como parte de su agenda en República Dominicana el General Clark conoció los avances en la operación del Sistema de Trazabilidad Fiscal de Bebidas Alcohólicas y Cigarrillos (TRÁFICO), en su condición de miembro del Consejo Directivo Internacional de SICPA, la empresa multinacional que instaló y opera este programa de control para la Dirección General de Impuestos Internos (DGII).
Clark, un general de 4 estrellas, tuvo una carrera de 38 años en el ejército de los Estados Unidos y llegó a ser Jefe del Comando Sur y Comandante Supremo Aliado en Europa.
En su carrera política fue precandidato a la nominación presidencial por el Partido Demócrata en 2003 y es un prolífero autor en temas de estrategia militar, frecuente fuente de consulta de los medios de comunicación estadounidenses.
